KLEMM KR 806-4GM and KR 806-4E: two efficiency paths for anchor and pile drilling

At bauma 2025 KLEMM presented the KR 806-4GM with a Power-Sharing diesel drive and the KR 806-4E electrohydraulic rig. This article separates verified performance claims from marketing shorthand and explains which site conditions favour each approach.

KLEMM used bauma 2025 to present two machines from the KR 806 platform that address the same broad drilling class through different drive concepts. The KR 806-4GM combines a diesel engine with automated hydraulic power management. The KR 806-4E uses an electrohydraulic drive that can operate from the site electrical supply, from its battery, or through a combination of both.

The important distinction is not simply diesel versus electric. A project team must consider drilling method, rod handling, available electrical infrastructure, mobilisation, noise restrictions and the expected duty cycle before deciding which configuration is suitable.

What KLEMM presented at bauma 2025

The KR 806-4GM is based on the KR 806-3GS. It was developed for heavy double-head drilling with an onboard MAG 6.1 magazine and manipulator for drill rods. KLEMM lists the machine at approximately 21.9 t without payload, while the rod magazine can carry up to 1,100 kg.

Its hydraulic system includes two load-sensing main pumps, each rated at 240 l/min at pressures of up to 350 bar. KLEMM's patented Power-Sharing system automatically adjusts power output to the drilling situation. According to the official bauma release, this can reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%. The words “up to” are important: the actual result depends on the work cycle and site conditions.

The KR 806-4E is a further development of the field-proven KR 806-3E rather than a direct electric conversion of the 4GM. It has a 180 kW electric motor and an optional battery with 160 kWh gross energy content. KLEMM states that it provides the same lifting capacity as the diesel-hydraulic KR 806-4GM, allowing a MAG 6.1 magazine to be attached.

How the two efficiency strategies differ

The KR 806-4GM improves a conventional diesel-hydraulic system. Its EEP energy-management package adjusts engine speed dynamically to load and operating condition, while Power-Sharing distributes available output according to the drilling demand. This approach is relevant where a project needs diesel autonomy but wants to reduce unnecessary engine load during variable cycles.

The KR 806-4E changes the primary-energy source. It can connect to a standard 400 V AC site distribution board for combined mains-and-battery operation. KLEMM also provides a higher-capacity connection for grid-bound operation, while the onboard battery permits temporary operation without a mains connection and covers peak loads.

KLEMM describes the machine as “zero emission”, but defines that term specifically as no local exhaust fumes, together with reduced fine-dust and noise pollution at the point of work. It should not be interpreted as a claim of zero lifecycle emissions.

Initial construction-site testing reported by KLEMM showed that the KR 806-4E required almost three times less energy than the diesel-powered model. This is a result from initial testing, not a universal performance guarantee. Energy consumption will still depend on the drilling method, ground, auxiliary equipment, idle time and the way the electrical supply is configured.

From exhibition machine to first jobsite operation

After its bauma 2025 debut, the KR 806-4E entered its first field operation in Oslo's Bjørvika district on foundation works for a new school. KLEMM reported that the rig installed RD piles with a diameter of 168.3 mm and a 90 mm steel core using DTH hammer technology. An electric compressor supplied the drilling process, and the rig worked in both grid-connected and battery-powered modes.

This example matters because it moves the discussion beyond a trade-fair prototype. It shows the complete operating system that an electric drilling project requires: the rig, the electrical connection, battery management and compatible electrically powered auxiliary equipment.

It does not prove that the same arrangement will suit every site. The Oslo project had its own pile design, power infrastructure, working restrictions and contractor methods.

Which project conditions favour each approach?

The KR 806-4GM may be the more practical starting point where:

  • the site has limited or unreliable high-capacity electrical infrastructure
  • the machine must move frequently between dispersed working areas
  • diesel refuelling is easier to organise than a suitable power connection
  • the duty cycle includes long periods away from a fixed site supply
  • the project needs the MAG 6.1 rod-handling configuration and conventional diesel autonomy

The KR 806-4E becomes more relevant where:

  • local exhaust fumes must be avoided in tunnels, enclosed spaces or sensitive urban areas
  • low noise is important near occupied buildings
  • a suitable 400 V site distribution system can be planned and protected
  • the project can coordinate the rig with electric auxiliary equipment
  • energy use, idle operation and charging can be managed as part of the production plan

Neither list replaces a technical specification. The drilling method, ground conditions and required production rate remain the primary selection factors.

Relevance to projects in Uzbekistan

For projects in Uzbekistan, the KR 806-4GM's Power-Sharing system may be relevant where anchor, micropile or pile drilling is undertaken on sites with changing loads and limited power infrastructure. The KR 806-4E may be of interest for urban excavation support, industrial interiors, tunnels or other areas where exhaust fumes and noise are tightly controlled.

However, an electric rig cannot be evaluated only by its battery capacity. The project must assess the available grid connection, transformer and cable arrangements, peak demand, protection against heat and dust, and the power requirements of compressors, pumps and other auxiliary equipment. Mobilisation distances and the availability of qualified electrical support also affect the decision.
