Ammann and DEWALT electric compactors: battery power for plates and rammers

Ammann and DEWALT have introduced a battery-powered light-compaction range built around two forward-moving vibratory plates and one rammer. The models are the eAPF 15/40, eAPF 15/50 and eATR 68, retaining key compaction output while cutting noise and exhaust fumes.

Ammann and DEWALT have introduced a battery-powered light-compaction range built around two forward-moving vibratory plates and one rammer. The models are the eAPF 15/40, eAPF 15/50 and eATR 68. Ammann positions them as electric-drive alternatives that retain the key compaction output of the corresponding petrol machines while reducing noise and eliminating exhaust fumes at the point of work.

The practical question is not whether battery equipment is automatically better. It is whether the work pattern, surface, charging plan and site restrictions suit an electric compacting machine. For contractors working in residential areas, enclosed spaces, courtyards, utility trenches or other noise- and ventilation-sensitive locations, the operating characteristics can be valuable. For remote sites with limited electrical access or uninterrupted long shifts, battery logistics require closer planning.

Three machines, two compaction tasks

The eAPF 15/40 and eAPF 15/50 are forward-moving vibratory plate compactors. Ammann lists both at a maximum frequency of 100 Hz and a maximum centrifugal force of 15 kN. The principal dimensional difference is working width: 400 mm for the eAPF 15/40 and 500 mm for the eAPF 15/50. Published working weights are 85 kg and 89 kg respectively, excluding the charger and battery where stated in the specification.

The narrower eAPF 15/40 can suit confined paths, small repair areas and places where manoeuvrability is more important than covering width. The eAPF 15/50 covers a wider strip with each pass and may be preferable for larger paving, landscaping and reinstatement zones. Both product pages list a 2.0 kW DEWALT drive, two-speed selection and a low-vibration handle.

The eATR 68 is a rammer intended for narrow and deeper compaction zones where a plate is not the right geometry. Ammann publishes a working width of 280 mm, a working weight of about 70 kg, maximum frequency of 11 Hz, maximum centrifugal force of 11.6 kN, and impact energy of 101 joules. Typical selection factors include trench width, soil type, lift thickness and the need to work close to pipes, walls or foundations.

Performance claims that can be stated safely

Ammann says the DEWALT-powered plates deliver a maximum frequency of 100 Hz, identical to their petrol counterparts. Its launch release also states that the electric-drive compactors deliver the same power as the gasoline-powered versions. This is a manufacturer comparison of machine output, not a guarantee that every battery and petrol machine will produce identical results in every soil or pavement layer.

Compaction quality still depends on the material, moisture, layer thickness, number of passes, operator technique and whether the selected machine is appropriate for the task. A battery drive does not remove the need for a site compaction plan or density verification where the specification requires it.

Battery compatibility and charging

The official Ammann launch material states that the lithium-ion batteries are compatible with Ammann e-drives and DEWALT machines, can be exchanged between compatible equipment and can share chargers. Ammann also states that, with the fast charger, the battery can reach 80% capacity in 40 minutes and 100% in one hour.

This charging claim is now present in Ammann's official release and supersedes the earlier editorial audit that marked it unverified. It should still be presented as the manufacturer's published charging figure. Actual charging time can be affected by battery temperature, battery condition, charger type, electrical supply and operating environment.

A realistic shift plan should account for the number of batteries, expected duty cycle, charging location, cooling time and available electrical capacity. A compact machine may have low fuel-handling requirements, but it still needs organised energy logistics.

What “no emissions on the jobsite” means

Ammann describes the electric machines as releasing no emissions on the jobsite and highlights their use in poorly ventilated or noise-sensitive areas. For precise editorial wording, RENTEK should describe this as no local exhaust fumes at the point of work. It should not be expanded into a claim of zero lifecycle emissions, because electricity generation, battery production, transport and charging infrastructure remain outside the machine's immediate operating boundary.

Reduced engine noise is another important benefit, but “silent” would be inaccurate. The vibration mechanism, soil contact and surrounding work still generate sound. The advantage is lower drive-system noise compared with a combustion-engine equivalent.

Operator and maintenance considerations

Ammann highlights switch-based starting, two selectable speeds, balanced handling, a low-vibration handle and daily maintenance without tools. These features may simplify operation and reduce routine preparation. They do not remove the need for trained operators, pre-use inspection, battery handling procedures and adherence to the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Battery packs and chargers should be protected from unsuitable storage conditions, physical damage, contamination and unauthorised repair. On hot and dusty projects, charging and storage areas should be planned as carefully as the work zone itself.

Where these machines may be useful in Uzbekistan

Potential applications in Uzbekistan include urban utility repairs, footpaths, landscaping, paving-stone installation, work beside occupied buildings, indoor or covered construction areas, and narrow trench compaction. Their greatest value may appear where local exhaust fumes or combustion-engine noise create a practical restriction.

  • daily operating hours and expected battery consumption
  • charger type and electrical supply at the site
  • temperature and dust protection for batteries and chargers
